Our History

Pretty River Academy first opened its doors in September 1998, ushering in a new era of educational standards in the Georgian Triangle Area. The school was incorporated in 1998 as a charitable non-profit organization. Since its inception, Principal and Founder Roberta Murray-Hirst has overseen the day to day operations of the school. Under her administration, the school's student population has seen impressive growth, from 14 students in its first year to its current population of 156.

Originally situated on the shores of Georgian Bay at the former Easter Seals Camp, the school is now located at its permanent facility on Hwy 26 in Collingwood. Opening in September of 2007, the new building has opened many doors for students and the community alike. Features include a complete teaching kitchen, SMART Board interactive whiteboards in all classrooms, and wireless internet available to all students and staff. Two fully equipped science labs, a music studio with sound dampening, and a growing library have contributed to growth in all academic areas. Built with the future in mind, the new facility will allow for continued expansion for years to come, with a sustained population eventually reaching 300.

Pretty River Academy offers Ontario Ministry of Education approved curriculum from Junior Kindergarten through Grade 12 and is audited and accredited by the Canadian Educational Standards Institute. Additionally, a three-year old pre-school program is available. Students in all grades participate in several enrichment activities, including science fairs, math fairs, and an annual drama production. Pretty River Academy's academic and extracurricular offerings are designed to foster growth in the "Four Pillars" of Academics, Arts, Athletics and Community.

Students from Pretty River Academy have had high levels of success in all areas. Three times students have been selected to attend the Canada Wide Science Fair. All high school students are encouraged to participate in the prestigious international Duke of Edinburgh Program, and to date four students have achieved the gold standard. Students also volunteer in a variety of community events and organizations, including the CIBC Run for the Cure, The Blue Mountain Watershed Trust Foundation, and the Collingwood Nursing Home. The school's concert band has traveled to the Kiwanis Music Festival in Barrie Ontario, and has brought home first place ribbons for four straight years.

The educational programming at Pretty River Academy has a strong focus on the future, preparing students for post-secondary education. This has resulted in all graduating students being accepted into the University of their choice.

From its humble beginnings, Roberta Hirst's dream of an Independent School with an academic focus has become a reality, and a source of respect and admiration from students, parents, alumni, and the community.
