PRESCHOOL & KINDERGARTEN
Observe and listen to children because when they ask ‘why?’ they are not simply asking for the answer from you. They are requesting the courage to find a collection of possible answers.
-Loris Malaguzzi – Founder of the Reggio Emilia Approach
Pretty River Academy has a fully accredited and licenced childcare and preschool. We are located in a natural wetland park which becomes the genesis of your child’s life long respect for nature and the environment.
With public concerns about the overcrowded approach to day care, Pretty River Academy assures parents of a maximum 1:8 teacher/student ratio. With two teachers in Pre-K and Kindergarten our maximum class size is 16.
Our teachers quickly grow to know more than just the names of the little ones they are entrusted to inspire. At this age the primary goal is to teach them to love coming to school, and to love learning every day.
Our highly successful Reggio inspired approach is a three year journey to bring a child to knowledge, rather than bringing knowledge to a child. Every new skill mastered builds a stronger foundation for the next new skill. The early childhood education at PRA supports whole-student success in elementary school and beyond.
During graduation speeches in June, the students heading off to university often reference their “first welcoming days in Mrs. Scarrow’s class”.
Children are Competent, Capable, Curious & Rich in Potential. We recognize that children come to us already strong, capable and resilient with a sense of wonder and knowledge.
All children are born with creativity and a deep curiosity. Fostering confidence in the child’s intention and desire at this age is critical to life-long success. Our approach employs an emergent curriculum that is devised individually from the children’s interests. This approach allows each child to develop an understanding of their world and their place within it. The goal is to cultivate within each child a lifelong passion for learning and exploration.
Children help to lead their own learning, to understand the way they learn, and begin to love learning and coming to school. Daily play and learning blocks are designed to promote the foundations of belonging, well-being, engagement and expression in children. Goals and expectations integrate the six guiding principles of “ELECT” (Early Learning for Every Child Today).
Early child development sets the foundation for lifelong learning, behaviour, and health. Respect for diversity, equity, and inclusion are prerequisites for honouring children’s rights and optimal development.
A Child-Driven Approach to Success
Pretty River Academy recognizes that development is staggered in the early years and adapts to the appropriate stage for each child when indulging their capabilities and curiosities. Daily and hourly they try new things and explore new ideas, all while learning and developing at their own pace.
Building a Solid Future
In our play-based learning center, Pretty River Academy provides a safe, caring and healthy environment for our children. We focus on a sense of belonging, making friends and interacting with their educators.
We understand that each child’s development differs according to family, community and life experiences. In each case, we aim to integrate all areas of the child’s development into our program.
Our goals for children are consistent with the Ontario Ministry of Education pedagogy:
Every child has a sense of belonging when he or she is connected to others and contributes to their world.
Every child is developing a sense of self, health, and well-being.
Every child is an active and engaged learner who explores the world with body, mind, and senses.
Every child is a capable communicator who expresses himself or herself in many ways.
To foster learning and support children’s interests, Pretty River Academy children’s programs provide variety of daily activities including:
Language and Physical Literacy
Science & Nature
Fine Motor and Gross Motor Skills
Our programs also:
Encourage children to interact and communicate in a positive way and support their ability to self-regulate
Foster the children’s exploration, play and inquiry
Provide child-initiated and adult-supported experiences
Offer opportunities to create relationships with others in the program
