Emotional Intelligence & Resilient Learners

Pretty River Academy’s Resilient Learner Framework

Pretty River Academy's mission is to develop the Resilient Learner in every student by helping them embrace a growth mindset, nurture curiosity, solve problems creatively, demonstrate self-awareness, and practice self-direction, while learning to collaborate meaningfully with peers.

We intentionally create learning environments where students work together, exchange ideas, and strengthen one another's thinking through purposeful collaboration. In doing so, we empower each child to reach their full academic and social-emotional potential and inspire a lifelong passion for learning.

  • Success extends beyond academics. It requires confidence to take risks, resilience to persevere, and the self-awareness and self-direction to grow into capable, independent learners.

At Pretty River Academy, we develop these capacities in tandem with academic excellence, knowing that learning is inherently emotional.

When students face setbacks or uncertainty, their ability to regulate emotions and stay engaged determines whether they grow or give up.

Pretty River Academy's approach supports students in learning to:

    • Manage their emotions

    • Handle challenges

    • Collaborate effectively

    • Stay motivated

    • Reflect and adapt

    • Pursue meaningful goals

  • Pretty River Academy combines two connected frameworks:

    The RULER Approach

    • An evidence-based model for developing emotional intelligence

    The PRA Resilient Learner Framework

    • PRA’s developmentally appropriate continuum of learner habits and skills

Together, these frameworks provide the tools and developmental pathway for students to grow into resilient, curious, and self-directed learners who know how to think.

  • At PRA, emotional intelligence is woven into the rhythm of each day.

Morning Meeting: Grounding and Skill Building
Each day begins with a dedicated RULER Morning Meeting, where students practice recognizing, understanding, labeling, and expressing emotions, strengthening self-regulation, navigating relationships, and approaching challenges constructively.

Students leave feeling focused, regulated, and connected.

    Resilient Learner Lab
The final 30 minutes of each day are dedicated to our Resilient Learner Lab, which is a focused time to strengthen skills and habits that build resilience.

    Students:

    • Reflect on challenges

    • Evaluate the strategies they used

    • Set goals for growth

This daily practice deepens reflection, strengthens self-awareness, and promotes self-direction skills that lead to increased confidence and the ability to take risks.

  • The Resilient Learner at PRA
Pretty River Academy's experienced faculty have developed a school-wide continuum showing how Resilient Learner skills grow from early childhood through middle school.

The framework focuses on five pillars:

    • Growth Mindset

    • Self-Awareness

    • Self-Direction

    • Curiosity
      Community

Developmentally appropriate skills, habits, and behaviors help students thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. As they progress, students increasingly demonstrate:

    • Independence in learning

    • Persistence through challenges

    • Constructive response to feedback

    • Leadership and initiative

    • Agency of their goals

The Resilient Learner framework makes growth visible, helping students understand not just what it means to develop as learners, but how to do it.

  • RULER: Building Emotional Intelligence
Pretty River Academy implements RULER, a research-based approach from Yale's Center for Emotional Intelligence, to develop emotional intelligence through explicit instruction, practical tools, and daily practice.

    RULER helps students and faculty:

    • Recognize emotions

    • Understand emotions

    • Label emotions

    • Express emotions

    • Regulate emotions

Students use shared tools, like the Mood Meter to track feelings, and strategies such as the Meta-Moment to respond thoughtfully rather than impulsively.

By using these tools schoolwide, students develop a common language for emotions and relationships, creating a strong, supportive learning community that fosters well-being and healthy interactions.

  • Emotional intelligence education is grounded in research in child development and neuroscience.

Studies of social-emotional learning, including RULER, show measurable gains in classroom climate, engagement, behaviour, wellbeing, and academic performance.

At PRA, these outcomes are visible every day. Students demonstrate growing independence, confidence, and resilience. Classrooms are focused and purposeful, with more time devoted to learning, as students take ownership of their goals and step into leadership with assurance.

  • The world our students are entering demands adaptability, creative problem-solving, initiative, and resilience.

Knowledge matters, but the ability to apply it in complex situations depends on emotional intelligence and perseverance.

The world needs our students’ ideas and leadership. Pretty River Academy equips them with the tools to bring both to life.
